If you had the panel off then removing the mirror assembly is no big deal. The hardest part is the panel.

It's just a matter of unscrewing the 3 nuts from the mounting post and unplugging the power. Being careful not to drop the nuts of course as they are small.

Let us know what you find if you decided to dig further. Plus, if you find that it's inside the housing it seems that this would be a warranty issue. Might be worth checking out.
