Well, this is a funny one that Dodge decided to create just for their vehicles. The front speakers are component style speakers where the door speakers are woofers and the dash speakers are tweeters. The rear speakers are full range speakers which are all filtered at the amp. Component speakers are a pair of woofers and tweeters that have signals separated by a single crossover. Finding a pair of component speakers with a 6x9 woofer (meaning it is not full range) is like finding a needle in a haystack. If you piece-mill the system you may be okay.
The factory installed Kicker amp pumps out 368Watts. You will be safe with just about any aftermarket speaker you can find. This is including all but the dash speakers. Starting with the dash speakers first, I would look for high-power tweeters because these dash speakers are known to blow over time. They are subject to the most abuse due to their common low-watt designs, dust, and direct sunlight (which has a tendancy to dry up the voice coils). They are the first to go in most cases. Consider getting some inline 4 ohm resistors so they are not driven so hard. Second, the door speakers are 6x9 woofers (w/o tweeters). They are installed to put out some mids and mostly low frequencies. Almost every brand can handle the power of a stock amp, so worry no more. Unfortunately, very few manufacturers have 6x9 woofers. Lanzar is one manufacturer that does. Though you can use any 6x9, the quality of sound will not be pushed to its full potential unless you are running off of a separate amp with a crossover and spliced into your rear speakers. The rear speakers are 6x9s as well. These are full range speakers, so 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way speakers will work. One issue that you may run into, is fitment. Not all 6x9s are true. Since they are mounted in sheet metal holes, you may have to rebore the holes for the speakers or dremel the ring prior to putting the speakers in place, so they go in the holes flush. Watts (in a nutshell) is the measure of power or energy conversion. When you take a low voltage signal and amplify it, you increase the energy, resulting in watts. Watts are considered for ALL speaker types, not just woofers. Woofers usually require more power because you are pushing a lower frequency. At levels where it is nearly impossible for the human ear to hear, that power is used to create a thump or vibration so if can be felt and heard better. Higher frequencies require less power. This is why the dash speakers usually go first for many cars. I hope this helps you out. There are many that may add their input as to what speaker brands to buy, but it all comes down to composition. Paper speakers are out and polypropolene and butyl-like materials are in. Good luck in finding what you need. |
