Aight, so I go to get my wiring harness for my '08 Magnum SE and the guy at the stereo place says I need some new type of computer box (crap I call it) that converts data signals into whatever for my aftermarket radio, it tucks in the side behind the CD player he said, it wasn't very big at all. He said all new Jeeps and Dodges have this new type of radio system. He asked me if I had an factory amp or pre-amp in the car, I said I don't know, but I don't think I do, because I don't have the premium sound, such as Boston, Bose, or whatever else the cars sometime come with factory. Can someone tell me if this is right or can I really get a typically wire harness like I always have for all my past vehicles? Much appreciated cuz's! I finally look it up on the net and I can't even find the box thing he was talkin about, I just find the typical wiring harnesses like I'm use to! How can I also tell if my radio does have the pre-amp in it for the factory system? Thanks again!

It sounds like you have the standard 4 speaker set up - 2 in the front doors (usually 6.5s for 4speaker) and 2 6x9s in rears... the 6 speaker has additional ones in the dash (3.5s)
The amp would have been under the drivers side to the right up... As it is with the 4 speaker all your speakers are powered by the pre-amp of the head unit, which is powering your speakers. What he is talking about is the Can Bus switched power accessory whatever... So you have to get a pricey harness that also converts it... I used the Metra XSVI-6502 Harness (~70 bucks) and then paired it with my head unit (for me a Pioneer DEH-P500UB). I opted to Soder pins to the wires and mount them in Molex connectors (like in a computer). The converter and stock stereo plug are on the left and the connection in the middle. The right is the ground with a quick join and the connection for the head unit...You will also need an FM adapter for the radio (Female Chrysler to RCA i believe... Best buy carries this) And you will need a mounting kit (I used a sosche one.... forget the model - use their website) So for your case you need: Head Unit Metra Acess XSVI-6502 (or similar adapter, all are about the same price) FM Adapter plug Mounting hardware |

Thanks for the info man. I finally got the XSVI-6502 and it doesn't fit into my harness. It looks just like yours too. My Magnum is a 2008, so I think they might have switched up the wiring harnesses, but I can't find anything that says its strictly for a 2008 Magnum, everything 2005-2007! You know anything about this? I tried all sorts of ways to see if I am just dumb and can't put a harness together, but I've installed plenty of stereo's before.

well that is a crucial bit of info that was left out of the advice.....
I thought they fixed the can bus power for the 08 model and made it normal (so you wouldnt have to drop 70 bucks on a harness) but maybe i am wrong |

As far as I know that little "box thing" is not necessary. What it does is allows the existing canbus lines to be used to activate your switched power.
The alternative is to not use the two CanBus lines (tape them off) and run a wire from the cigarette lighter below to your ACC 12V wire on your harness. It ends up doing the exact same thing with a $70 savings. I know this method is commonly used (myself included) but I am not sure if it works for 2008 models but I'd imagine it would. |
