Dimmer wire on Aftermarket radios

Getting ready to install a Alpine radio in my wifes Magnum. My question is, there is always a dimmer wire on radios. I never hook them up. Because the one time I did it kept blowing cabin fuses. Was wondering if anyone else has installed a radio and hooked up the dimmer wire and had any problems., and if it actual dim the lights on the radio when used. Thanks in advance.

No problems with my Avic Z2 and it does dim the screen.
