Done did it again, new sub
Most have seen the 12" Treo SSi that I have had for about 2 years.
![]() The Treo is dying, wont play at low vol until it warms up. I went looking at the Alpine (im an Alpine nut, see signature haha) R-Series 12" but the rms rating on it is only 500wrms. The Alpine MRD-M605 puts out 600wrms(661wrms tested). Soo not good. Didnt want to spend the $450 for a sub again. $350 for the 15" R-series wasnt too bad, so I finally decided to say the heck with it and wait for it to go totally. One of my "usuals" is hitting the pawnshops around here on payday to see if there are any good deals. Found this 15 R-series for $150. .I checked out with an ohm meter to make sure there wasnt any deadspots in the excursion and looks like a winner. I was in uniform from when I got off of work and there was a gentleman in there that had a load of coupons that the pawn shop put in phone book. He hands me a 20% off coupon. So with tax it came to $127.20 Playing around with the same box I have had forever it seems. ![]() It's cuttin time!!! |

OK 2 hours later, the carpeting is temp, I am still trying to figure out what I want to so do with it. The reason it looks like 2 different shades is that the grain is reversed on one.
A side by side comparison ![]() One nice thing about the Alpine is that the polepiece vent is setup to go to the sides. This way you dont have to have the space behind the magnet. Thank goodness!!! I had 1/16" spave haha. I put a 1/16" foam pad in the box where the magnet would be. With this setup, I don't even need a brace for the 44# sub. ![]() With the amp cover up ![]() And with the amp cover down. ![]() And a 4 way comparison, took pic at night and flash. ![]() I am totally impressed with the Sub. I had 2 S-Series 10s when I started and thought they were good, then the Treo blew them away and now the 15". The box is on the upper end of the recommended sealed volume, (1.3-2.5ft3 max and this winds you being 2.3ft3). I never really liked 15"s wayyy back when I statered getting into car audio. They sounded "sloppy" but this one sounds pretty good. The optimum volume is 1.75ft3. I might play with the idea of putting some wood in there to get to 1.75ft3. I think that it might make it sound even "tighter". The Treo is a fantastic sub, but the poor thing had to work like crazy http://www.youtube.com/v/b18e_nMC9X8 Esp at 20 secs I played the same music at the same level and the thing moves only about 1/2" at the very most. The other thing I noticed is that my lights dont dim anymore! I wish I would have measured the current on the amp (display) with the Treo and compared. I think there might be something there haha. Now the only thing is that I used to protect the Treo with the speaker ring and just have to be careful now until I figure someting out. Its midnight adn time to get my beauty sleep! __________________ Last edited by JamminWagon; 03-01-2008 at 12:01 AM.. |
