sub volume
Quick question, how much difference does sub box volume make. And before anyone answers, I know it does make a difference but how much. I am not looking for the window shaking bass just a little extra bass. I am designing my enclosure and the way I have it now it will be about .8 cubic feet and speakers recommend 1 cubic feet. Relastically how much differnce would that make, will I just lose the really loud shaking bass or will the entire range sound like crap. I know I am probaly making some bass purists cringe. And if it matters they are good speakers, I am running 2 12 Alpine type R's with an alpine PDX 1.1000 driving them. Thanks for your time.

It can make it sound like crap, allot of popping sounds as it tries to breath, it can destroy the sub after a bit...but then again it all depends on how far your off... .8 isnt to far off it just depends on how picky the sub is your best bet is to talk to someone with Alpine experience...

it can def make it sound like crap and al is right it also can wear the speaker out faster. My box is just shy of what it is suppose to be and i cant tell the difference. BUT you also have to take into account the displacement of the sub to dont forget about that... here is the link i found for the alpine type rs

Thanks Rob, using that link on there it says for a sealed box the recommend volume is .7 - 1.0. so my .8 will be perfect. Will prob try to get it as close to 1.0 as possible though. Thanks the other site I had looked at said 1.0 cubic feet.

What kind of music do you listen to? A smaller box will give more tight punch to the bass, a larger box will boom more good for Rap smaller for rock. Thats what I have always found, And it seems like a bigger box takes more power.IMO

You said you had 2 speakers right? The .7-1.0 is for a SINGLE speaker. Throwing them in a box (without bracing) would give you .7ft3 total (minus speaker displacement). So that would be .35ft for each speaker, unless i mis-understood the original post.

Also, for a sealed enclosure, the air inside the box acts as a spring. This is why they have recommended sizes for boxes. If the box is too big you might as well as take it "free air". It is fun taking a cheapo sub and hanging it from the garage ceiling and pushing it hard. The brand X we did, destroyed itself in under a min. If the box is extremely too small, there wont be enough air to compress to act as a spring and it would be like pushing in dense stuff. The 15" sub I am running says that 2.5ft3 the max volume with a optimum of 1.75ft3, My box is 2.4ft3. So I will take a 2x4 and make it .65ft3 and stick in inside the box. |

when a manufacturer recommends a volume it usually is for an optimum enclosure that will play well with most types of music, but that doesn't mean it is the only size it will play in. depending on the sub and its structure it might not make that much of a difference. i run a type r in a mustang and the enclosure is smaller due to limited space and it sounds just fine. i have never seen a sub destroy itself because the enclosure was a little too small.
