Lightbulb [idea] Monthly Photo Contest

For all the photographers out there, what do you think about a monthly themed photo contest here at CustomMagnums.com. Maybe some of you have taken part in something similar on another forum.

In order for this to happen, I would need someone to step up to the plate and take charge of the contest. They would be responsible for maintaining each contest and helping to establish and enforce the rules. If you would be interested you could PM me with your reasons as to why you think your qualified for the position.

With that being said, we need ideas about the rules and how we should handle everything logistically?

Throw me your thoughts.

I think it's a great idea!

I'd step up and volunteer, but I want to enter!!

I'd suggest:

Format:
  • Bi-Monthly 'Contest'
  • 1 week of Theme suggestions
  • 1 week of Theme vote by members
  • 30 days of Submissions
  • 2 weeks of voting
  • Rinse and Repeat
Rules:
  • Photo Processing allowed but not manipulation - It's not a photoSHOP contest
  • No more than 2 entries per person per contest
  • Themes open for interpretation - i.e. - LX and Forks can be flatware or a fork in the road. Creativity encouraged!
  • Photos must be yours taken by you for the contest - No image search or image re-use out of your collection
I'm totally in no matter what!!!

Well I think Junior laid out the rules pretty well when we decided to do this on LXforums:

They are as follows:

1) One entry per member, per contest.
2) Member must take photo.
3) Member's LX must be in the photo.
4) Photograph must be taken for this contest - no previous shots allowed.
5) Photoshopping is not allowed except for modifying the license plate, brightness and contrast, and crop/resize.
6) Maximum size - 800 x 600. Oversize photos will not be allowed. Resizing available if needed.
7) The winner will be responsible for deciding upon the theme of the following month's contest, and is not eligible to participate in that contest.

I'll volunteer as admin. Other have expressed to me in the past that they feel my experience and equipment gives me an unfair advantage...BLAH whatever. I do it for fun, and I still havent won any of the contests yet .

With that said, I'll admin the contest if others find me fit to do so.

PS...I might talk to George and see if we cant get a prize involved

800x 600 limit is really too small in my opinion...... my default Res shoots at almost four times that and cameras (even cheap ones) can usually shoot even a few MP blowing that resolution out of the water.

Please consider atleast 1024 x 768 or ideally 1280x1024. I can do some photo test if anyone wants to see how it will look at the different resolutions but my Two Cents is that 800x600 is Way to small.

Besides that i like the spirit of this and im curious what the themes would be.....
Will be making some submissions soon....

Well the idea behind 800x600 is to keep the bandwidth low and/or make it load quicker, and also to have a uniform size for everyone to submit their photos in so we dont have some that are 6000x4000 or 240x480 either. Keeping them smaller also make a universal fit for people browsing on smaller screens like phones or laptops. I think 1024x768 would still be suitable. What we could do is provide a link below your submission to a high resolution file or just like the photo.

Regarding size - it pretty much depends on where the images are hosted.
If we are going to host on our own webhosting, I don't think size should be limited (I can volunteer to help people out that don't have adequate hosting as I have more space and bandwidth than I need.). If the hosting is going to be done on this site, Steve would have to set the size.

Another thing to connsider is making the photos property of the site if some entity would ever step up to provide prizes or anything...

^^ Per intellectual property law I would suggest keeping copyright ownership to its rightful owner, the photographer.

In regards to sizing, hosting the pics here on CM would tie up a fair amount of space and yeah...steve would need to determine it.

I still think the best way is to link the smaller photo to a high resolution shot. Personally if I end up submitting photos I will upload nothing higher than 1024x768 due to theft of images, and they would be watermarked.
