Exterior StylingGrills, Body Kits and other accessories
My engine cover was mucked up on the top (from hitting the hood - don't ask me how this happened) so I thought I would spray it. Main color is VHT engine paint in "Hemi Orange", top piece is metallic gray - same paint I used to paint the grille last weekend. Not sure I like the orange though.....but it is Hemi Orange!!
Did you have to do anything special to prep the surface other than wash and dry?
Actually yes....it's all in the prep! I disassembled the top piece from the cover (there are speed nuts underneath), cleaned both pieces very well, scuffed everything down with a scotchbrite pad (red one), wiped it all down with naptha, primed with a plastic adhesion promoter, primed again with VHT high heat engine primer then painted the final color on both pieces and let it dry for about 2 days before reassembling and installing back on the engine. I used a liquid masking agent (available at the hobby store) on the "HEMI", "5.7 L V8" and the rams head - once that dried (took 24 hours) I used an exacto knife to cut the outline around, when done done painting just peel the liquid mask off. That stuff worked VERY well!!
I like the orange! But for all the time it took to dry, what did you drive?? I can't be without a car for more than 4-5 hours, (always picking up/dropping off kids!). You must have a back up vehicle, right?
Oh no the car drives just fine without the engine cover! It's really nothing more than a big pretty piece of plastic that snaps onto a few clips. The motor looks kinda like the SRT underneath..... I can walk to the store if need be and I work from home most of the time!
