Need Your Opinion!!

I am new to this forum being that i just got a 2005 magnum r/t. Is there any way I can remove the roof racks and save a buck or two?? I went to a body shop and they quoted me $1400. Being that im only 19 and dont have any knowledge on body work, is this a reasonable quote? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

this is how the rack is mounted. Studs are welded to the roof braces and poke up through holes in the roof skin. To take them off the holes have to be welded up. cutting off and using filler does not work well at all. The roof panel is too flexible.

One thing you can do is find a local vo-tech or college with an auto body course and usually all you have to do is pay for supplies. Draw back is that it takes longer than if you take it to a body shop. If I remember right it was about $550 when everything was done.

I understand that the studs will have to be shaved and the holes will need to be sealed shut (might require welding), and then of coarse there is the paint job to finish off.
Others have said that it is not a cheap mod if you want it done right.

$1400 sounds mighty high, but I have yet to get a quote myself but its on my to do list. Other members have said around $800 to $1000. Shaving the roof rack requires the headliner be removed, the rack unbolted, and the stud's drilled out and the holes welded shut plus paint and body work. Yes a lot of work.

If your willing you might ask the body shop if they would offer you a better price if you removed the headliner, unbolted the roof rack, and if your confident drill out the studs. This is what I plan to do to try and get the price down to $500.

If they do it right you are absolutely correct, the main thing to look for is that they weld in new metal before finish and paint. Some shops will insist on removing the interior head liner to do this and the cost jumps up considerably, becuase of the labor, depending on the going rates your area.
