Ok everyone im in the middle of a project in the back of my mag and want to change the color of the plastic panels...what kind of paint are you guys using and how good is it holding up?? do they have a wide selection of colors?
The Project
I just built a Wedge for my JL's i covered it in black but it doesnt match anything...here is a pic of my box you can see what i mean...
The panel right in front of my box will house my three new amps on the way....yup ive been watching my pennies and i have three brand spanking new Special Edition Black JL AMPs on the way....ouch!! 500/1, 250/1, and 300/4
i want to do most of the plastic a charcoal gray with the black carpet it should give me what im looking for........what you think????
My opinion? Change the color of the box, not the panels. Maybe visit an upholstry shop and look for matching vinyl or carpet, or you could even use plastic laminate (formica, comes in 100's of colors), or even paint. Everytime I've painted plastic auto panels it doesn't look as good as factory, and it will chip off, especially in a "cargo" area. Just my opinion of course
If ya wanna paint'm, go to an automotive paint supply store (the PPG store, etc.), they have stuff special for it. Duplicolor also makes "interior" paint. Blackmagnum06 (?) just did his so hopefully he'll chime in!
i have a piece that some what matches the seats but what do you think?
not sure why i went with black but then again not sure why the interior has four different colors in it to begin with...maybe i was just matching the carpet up front..
That looks pretty close! Are ya good with a router? The "formica" trick works really good and gives it a custom look, and I bet you could match those side panels dead on. You just glue the laminate to the box and use a rubber roller, then trim the edges flush with a router and cut-off bit. With the way your box fits in there you may only have to do the face. Then you could do your amp board the same way and everything would tie together without the carpet look. It would look very similar to a fiberglass enclosure. A cabinet shop could probaby even do it for you for pretty cheap!
Here's some links about plastic laminates, it's just like doing a countertop. I did the back end of a show truck several years ago ..... I also worked in a cabinet shop
with a router yup im a jack of all trades glad i went to a high school with all the good shop classes i have four years of welding, wood, fiberglass & plastics
...i could probably use headliner cloth that would be cool give it a little padding and it might match even closer to the seats or to whatever color i decide on...im also thinking of doing a little window to see my custom cable job but we will see.......
