Question Shifter Knob Install Help

Bought a new shifter Knob that I knew didn't fit, but I had to have it. I WILL make it work somehow, but while I', stumbling to find a good solution, can anyone provide some tips?

Knob opening is 5/8" and the Magnum shifter rod is about 1/4" or so. What tricks do you guys and girls have?

Big thanks for the help.

The shifter I bought came with 3 adapters. The Magnum shifter is an 8mm.
Can you tap the new knob to accept the 8mm threads or find an adapter to fit?

I will tap for 8mm - thanks for the measurement MadDad

However. the Thread for the knob is 5/8, but I cannot find any 5/8 bolts that it will thread onto. It is not a Fine thread and I have tried every 5/8 bolt at Home Depot. Is the 5/8 thread for auto different from the 5/8 thread that you would find at hardware store? I know that may be a dumb question, but don't want to have to ask WTF happened later because I didn't ask the dumb questions up front.

Thanks again...

Maybe I'm missing something? Why are you trying to put a bolt into the shifter? The adapters that came with my shifter look like this

The adapters and the locknut were included. Ideally you want something that will thread onto your shifter. What you're looking for would thread onto the shifter arm and fit into the opening on the knob, either threaded or otherwise firmly attached.

MadDad, The shifter/knob has a threaded hole in it 5/8". I was thinking of cutting off a 5/8" bolt, then threading it into the hole in the shifter to "plug it". Drill and tap the Bolt/Plug to thread on to the 8mm stock shifter rod.

Better idea is obviously to find the adapters. Where did you get your shifter? I could probably just order a set of adapters.

I actually have it installed now with a hard resin plug that I tapped for the 8mm. I am still going to go with the adapter when I find them.

Thanks for the help.

I picked up my shifter at Advance Auto parts for $28.88 It sounds like you're doing okay. I've never worked with resin before, how durable is it? If you can't find an adapter maybe a local machine shop can turn you one.
Can't wait to see pics!
