    hey i was reading the owners manual last night in regards to D and 3 , and sure enouh the manual states pretty much the same, D is a 4th/overdrive gear, which will cause the tranny to shift in and out of overdrive and in and out of 4th, due to load, hills speed etc, and it states by using 3 it keeps the tranny cooler and its fluid, as well as the torque converter...so yes even te manual pretty much states using 3 is perfectly fine for cruising with out the tranny having to be shifting up and down , in and out of over drive all the time..
