Yes I have. It's an all around Korean Martial art much in the same way Shaolin Kempo is an all around Chinese art.

Kicking, punching, holds, throws grappling, weapons, etc. They pattern different movements based on animals......Tiger, leopard, crane, Dragon, eagle, bear, monkey, snake.

Very similar to the Art I study (Shaolin Kempo) I Highly recommend this if you can find a good school.

There are many styles out there. Some, such as Jiu-jitsu, akido, etc. may not suitable for children due to immaturity of the musculoskeletal system.

Like I mentioned, Tae-kwon-do or Kempo are good places to start. Look for a school with multiple locations and/or history of longevity. Smaller, independent schools can have a habit of disappearing.

Most arts can be fairly similar when starting out. Movement, blocking, punching & kicking along with endurance training are the basis of most arts. Often, it's not until a student starts getting comfortable with these beginning skills do they realize or show a tendancy for a particular style. Be it a kicking oriented style like Tae-kwon-do, which is also a harder style. Kung-fu, which can be a softer style. Or a style like a Shaolin Kempo which encompasses multiple philosophies or methods.

    Robert,

Tae-kwon-do seems to be the most popular, while Kempo might be the most universal. The only thing I would recommend is that before you commit to anything look around and ask questions of other parents.

At a young age, the instructor and teaching methods are more important than the style.

IMO -- you should be looking for an instructor that stresses the importance of doing well in school, discipline at home and general good behavior as well as teaching the martial arts.

Hope this helps....Any other questions, please ask.

    Bill
