Well I really wanted a hemi orange engine cover for my 06 AWD RT and I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a custom paint job for a simple one color paint scheme. First I tried to order the GoMango orange cover from my dealer. Unfortunately only the center piece is orange, the rest is black, and that's not what I wanted. So I took off my engine cover, removed the center piece and first washed the cover with warm soapy water. I then wiped it down with 90% Isopropal Alcohol. Next I brushed on several layers of liquid masking film (available at most hobby shops) and let them dry overnight. The next day I trimmied the masking film to the edges of the letters with an exacto #11 blade and peeled away the waste. I then sprayed 2 light coats of white Krylon Fusion paint followed by 2 light coats of Orange Krylon Fusion. FYI the fusion paint is a specialty paint that is design to have moleclear bond to plastic. Once the cover had dried for several hours, I lightly traced around the letters with the exacto blade to give a sharp line when I removed the masking film. I finalally peeled away the masking film and reassembled the cover.
Cheap and Easy and it did the trick for me. Now when I pop the hood you can see the size of the hemi without it getting lost in a see of black. DSC01388.jpg
Thanks guys,
It's nothing real special but it fits the bill nicely.
Steve,
It took a total of maybe 2 hrs of my time but it was spread over 2 days for drying. I was going to clear it but the fusion bonds so well the protection of the clear wasn't needed. If I choose to do some airbrushing on it later then of course I'll shoot some clear then.
Brad,
Heat was my main concern in the first place, that was until I removed the cover only to find thick foam rubber backing on the cover. Let me put it this way, If the foam aint melting then the paint aint either. Seriously, it's been there for awhile now and not one sign of failing.
regards,
Ant
