After being laid off, looking for almost two years, working in consulting with no benefits and 100 percent commission; I found work.
Went to work with a local hospital and love it. I used my experience and certifications from previous work and the Army to finally get on as a Medical Technician. The pay isn't great but it's pay none the less. WITH BENEFITS!
I just enrolled at a local college to go ahead and get my RN degree and will start school in August. I'm scared to death as I'm 42 years old and having to start my career all over again. But, I figured I couldn't go wrong getting back into the medical field and won't have to worry about a job ever again.
I've wanted to be a nurse ever since my 17 year old son was born, he was 7 weeks early and weighed 2lbs. 5oz. I spent every day by his side and learned alot about the medical field. I always have some laim excuse for not doing it but bottom line is I'M SCARED TO DEATH TOO! I'm now 35 and although I know it's never to late, I work full time and now have 3 kids so it seems almost impossible. Maybe your success will encourage me!
Congrats on the job. I'm glad your interested in Nursing... My wife and I are both Registered Nurses, in fact I was an LPN in the Army for almost 13 years. Finished as I got out. Met her, she was a CNA. By starting out as a Tech, you will see if it is for you. The money is definately solid..... Have any questions, would love to help in any way to encourage a career in Nursing. Congrats on the Job
Thanks a lot - I know this is where I want to be and where I want to go. I was an EMT for 4 years with a hospital in Georgia, 3 years as a medic in the Army attached with the sniper corps and air assault attached to the 82nd. Ended up seeing and doing a few things and pulled a couple of tours before I got out.
I wanted to go into nursing when I joined the Army but my ASFAB score was pretty high and they talked me into other things. I should have stuck to my guns but must say that working as a Sniper, medic and getting air assault qualified was a good life.
I'm trying to transfer my certification for EMT from Georgia to Florida but it's difficult as Florida doesn't want to accept any transfers. I'll keep trying and will start RN school in August no matter what. My goal is to get my RN degree and go to work for Life Flight as that will fall right in with what I did in the Army.
Thanks for the offer and I will be calling on your help for sure.
Thanks for the congrats. It's nice looking forward to getting up and going to work every day.
Update - Florida will not accept my Paramedic license from the state of Georgia. However, they will accept a medical license from Alabama.
Alabama will accept a medical license from Georgia. The University of Southern Alabama has agreed to accept my Paramedic license with the national boards testing and then transfer them to Florida for me. It will cost a little but worth it in time and will not require me to attend Paramedic school again.
I have also been accepted into RN school officially to start in August. If my plan goes the way I want, I will be on Life Flight within two years.
I'll keep everyone updated and thanks again for all of the support.
So far so good - I start for my re-certification May 14th and will be carrying on with my Paramedic re-certification until August. August I am set to start my RN training and hopefully in a year I will be either on Life Flight, ICU (where I've been working already) or the Emergency Room.
Thanks for asking and I'll try to keep everyone informed.
