Could be the higher flow exhaust letting out rich fumes prior to the cats warming up and working. I get basically the same thing.

I just had a new intake put in under warranty because of the ERG code going off but it also smelled before the new intake was put in. I trust this smell on start up will not do any damage, maybe this is what caused the ERG fault to begin with? I guess its something I have to live with until a fault code shows up

I have no idea why they would change the intake for an egr code...
There is a service bulletin for the egr solenoids P0406 and p0407 that requires a reflash of the pcm.
If it were me take it to another stealership and have the work inspected and get a reflash for the egr code.

I have the same issue and have determined that bean burritos are the root cause of my problem.
