I have a hard time believing it was ONLY the 87 fuel that would make the car act in such a way. No doubt it contributed to it, but I wonder if it was just some really bad gas; a station that needed to clean their tanks or something. I had that happen on a VeeDub I used to have. No fun!!

I don't know if that was the only contributer, but for $1.50 more a fill-up it's not worth the risk to me.
The manual says 87 oct. is acceptable, 89 oct. is recommended .. I personally run only 91 0ct. and have the wife doing the same.
The engine is rated at just under 10.0:1 compression ratio and I want to have all the horsepower I paid for.
I've had my mag for 2 years and all i've been running is the standard 87, Would it be bad for the engine to all of a sudden switch to 89 or 91 after 2 years of the same fuel?
I thought the same thing but the more I thought about it its only costing $2-3 more to use premium, and the improved gas mileage its well worth the extra couple bucks.
