Hey all,

Last week I bought a Cobra ESD787 radar detector in a Wal*Mart I was in while on my way to Las Vegas. I was using it, and passed some cops on the way. The thing barely registered.

I've been wondering why this thing wouldn't pick up, so I did my own laboratory test on it for a definitive answer.

In my patrol car I use an MPH Bee 3 radar. It's only a couple of years old and is certified with the State of Utah. It always passes it's internal calibration every shift and my 20MPH and 50MPH tuning forks work flawlessly.

I turned it on, turned on my front antenna, put it in stationary mode and got in my mag. I parked my mag a car length away from my police car in a head in type of deal with my radar antenna pointing straight at the detector. My Cobra measured the KA band, but only 1 out of 5, with 5 the strongest!!!! And the same deal with my rear antenna.

WTH??? Peice of crap, I'm returning it. Stay away from Cobra.

I always take my Dads Escort when I take road trips. That thing has saved me many times..... I mean, I don't speed at all, but if I did it's worth the $300 buck to buy a good fuzz buster.

yeah i second the remark about cobra being crap... didnt save me from my ticket... i know i shouldnt have been speeding but with this economy i dont want to ever be late for work... usually it only picks up the sheriffs vehicles for some reason.... i paid a little over $200 for mine figuring the old theory.. more expensive = more effective...nope... these cobras belong in the fail thread imho.....

There are some states here in the USA where they are illegal also and can be confiscated if caught with one.

I had a cobra before i upgraded to a k40 system. and it was one of the ones that has 360 dectection and man that things worked awesome. I would get warned almost 2 miles in advance. I guess you get what you pay for. Dealr cost on the one I got was 230 which means it probably retailed for over 500. the one pictured above looks less than 100 so the statement is true.

If you're going to run a detector, which is illegal in some states anyway, why not just go the extra step and get a jammer?

thats what i have a k40 front and rear radar and jammers.

I took it back and went to Radio Shack and got a Whistler® XTR-150. I'm going to play around with it and see how it works. I don't have a ton to spend on a detector.
