How To: Tint Tail Lights (VHT Night-Shades)

This is a fairly simple procedure. I would recommend you allocate a whole day to this procedure so you don't rush things and let the paint dry between the different steps. By no means am I a professional paint/body person. I am sure there are many different ways to prep this project.

Tools needed -

VHT Nite-shades taillight tint
Automotive quality clear coat(R & E Paint Supply. 2 Part (2K), Aerosol, Urethane Clear Coat)
Small Hand
Panel popper(optional)
1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper
Bowl of water
Masking tape

1. Remove the 2 panel clips on the side of the taillight. You can use a flathead screwdriver if you don't have a panel popper.

2. Remove the plastic screen on the interior. Pull back the insulation and you will see the plastic wingnut that is holding the taillight on. This is were a pair of small hands helps. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THE WINGNUT INSIDE THE PANEL. You will not be able to retrieve it.

3. Pull the taillight out and remove the bulbs/wiring. Repeat on other taillight.

4. Now that we have the taillights out, we need to prep them for the paint. I used 1500 grit and soaked the paper in water. I sanded each taillight making sure to keep the sandpaper/taillight wet. After you have sanded the taillight, mask off any areas you do not want tinted. For this set, I choose to leave the reverse lights clear.

5. Spray a light even coat onto each taillight. Wait about 20 minutes(depending on temp) and do additional coats until the taillights are to your desired darkness. I choose to do 3 coats as I wanted it dark, but still wanted to be able to see the brake lights during the day.

6. You may choose to wet sand in between each coat. If you do this you want to leave more time to let the paint completly dry.

Next, apply your clear coat to protect your taillights and give them a glossy finish. Unfortunatly, by this point I got very impatient and put on a couple HEAVY coats of clear too quickly. This resulted in some huge runs. I have ordered a buffer and will show you how to wet sand and buff your taillights if you run into the same problem.

7. Reinstall your taillights.

Here is a finished picture of the taillights installed.

When clear coating how long should I wait from the point I spray the clear to when I sand it? Wait until dry of corse but any prefrence?

Also I am taping off the blinker and reverse light parts (like steves) and want to know... After I spray the coats of VHT do I take the tape off then wet sand and clear the whole light or do I leave the parts that are taped off alone?

Last thing... When buffing it will any orbital buffer work? Any details on this process? This is the first time using a orbital buffer so just want to know.

I fixed the running problem by wetsanding the lights back down to the lenses, but now there is a slight problem with the clear coat. I wetsanded with 1000 grit then did 2 coats of VHT and 4 coats of clear and now the lights are partialy clear, (wetsanding with 2000 grit paper between each coat). They have this weird texture to them and would like to know if anybody else had this problem and/or how to fix it. The lenses are smooth to the touch but like I said there is this kind of specked texture to them. They are both the same way too. I was told to wetsand them again with 2000 grit and then polish them but everytime I sand them they get really "cloudy". Is this right? Any and all help is well appreciated!

What kind of Clear Coat did you use? is it a lacquer finish? i would just give them one more hit of the clear coat and Don't wet sand them if you have no more runs and just polish them with a buffer. I today just decided to tint mine more and i was faced with a dilemma, I wet sanded the clear coat and then applied more VHT and all of a sudden, the coat turned all spiderwebby, i guess the clear coat must of not been a Lacquer or somethin of the sort, cause now i gotta let them dry and sand out that coat and try again. Sux cause i'm almost out of the VHT

just paint my tails. I followed all the instructions everything came out fine.Just one thing, when i applied the clear coat and it dried it has left a orange peel look, not smooth as I expected. Can anybody advise me how to smooth them out. Do i have to buff them? Thanks All.

Ok with it being so cold past week or so . I wanted to try this mod , So I was thinking of a way to dry the lights ,I had use a hairdry and it works great 3 coats within 15 mins , and the same amount of time on the clear . What took the longest was tapeing up the lights . The clear that I used is called engine clear resists heat up too 500*f , it is made by plasti-kote. I don't think I will ever get that close to the sun, I am sure the blub will get that hot. I am sure the clear will last a long time against the sun rays .
