How does the Nightshades react with professional clear(Sikkens, Dupont)? Should it cure then sand before shooting clear over it, or can you put it on wet when the VHT flashes off(the dry time between coats)? Thanks.

When I did mine, I used only Duplicolor products. Can't tell you how others will work.
When spraying, wait for the surface to be dry to the touch. You can then add another coat. You can do a pre clear coating wet-sand with 2000 grit after about an hour.
I wouldn't do any final sanding/polishing for at least 1 day.

Just finished doing mine, thanks steve for the write-up!! Pics and a thread to follow

I'd rather use a catalyzed clear. It would provide a more durable product. Has anyone experimented? (Wow, that's a wide open question!)
Use what you want. You can always strip and redo it. I was just telling you what's been know to provide great results time after time after time.

so i was gonna make mine darker today and f em up....(((sanded em down, and when i sprayed vha on it started cracking up everywhere(guess some kind of reaction with clear coat, don't know..)i run out of vha..so driving around like a fool with ugly tails haha, gonna send em down real good when get my vha spray and post up then, bad thing about it waisted like 5 hours....

Hey, i did my friends tail lights and my 3rd brake light yesterday. used vht nightshades and they came out great. then i used vht clear cloat and it made them look very dull/flat. has anyone else used the vht clear before? it was bright and sunny out so it was the temp or anything that turned them dull. they look pretty crappy and i feel bad for my friend having to drive around with them :( im hoping wet sanding and buffing will shine them up, but if not then ill have to sand them down and start over.

any ideas?

yeah try to buff and wax man i had to resand mine it sux big time!!!or u could just do light sanding with 2000 grit and then spray clear but make sure when u spray that u spray enough so u get that wet look!

I'm sure you can achieve a shine with the VHT clear but you'll need a fine compound to get you to that point. If your finish is smooth, (no orange peel, runs, dust nibs, or fisheyes) a two stage compound/ finishing system should get you there without having to wetsand. Wetsanding is performed to level the finish fast, the finer the grit the smaller the scratches. Compounds are merely liquid sandpaper but in even finer grits. Some break down as you work them and become less gritty leaving smaller scratches. The goal is to leave the smallest scratches as possible result in what appears to be a smooth and shiney finish.

Tip:
Laying heavy clear coats doesn't neccessarily improve the finish, if it's too heavy you will end up with a milky appearance.

hey how long now have you had your tail lights tinted? i heard that vht fades but i pretty much think the people that said that didnt do it right and didnt put a clear coat over it and stuff?
it doesn't fade ..... I had mine tinted since January 2006, but re-did them a few months ago because I wanted to add some custom paint to them. it's all in the clear and wet-sanding that makes them shine and makes them last .....
